Cornell and IC Track Teams Face off on the East Hill

    This past Saturday the Cornell University and Ithaca College track & field teams faced off in the Greg Page Relays at Barton Hall. The event was the first meet of the winter season for both teams and Cornell's first indoor competition since 2/29/20.

    Cornell's top individual performer in the meet was women's team member Leone Farquharson who won the 60m dash (7.62 seconds) and the long jump (6.09 meters).

    In addition to Farquharson's two victories, the Cornell women had four other individual first-place finishers including Brooke Overholt (300m), Maria Siciliano (pole vault), Marguerite Lorenzo (high jump), and Noelle Elkinton (shot put).

    On the men's side, the Big Red had five individual victories with wins from Tomas Kersulis (300m), Curtis Weh (long jump), Otreyvien Taylor (high jump), Johannes Stromhaug (pole vault), and Dan Mead (shot put).

    Both the Cornell men's and women's teams recorded victories in the distance medley relay, 4 x 800 meter relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay.

    Ithaca College saw two victories, one apiece from the men's and women's teams. Julia Tomanovich won the 5000m in a personal-best time of 19:21.11, and Luke Tobia came out on top in the weight throw with a mark of 17.26 meters.

    Bombers competitors Meghan Matheny (pole vault) and Aaron Davis (long jump) both posted runner-up finishes in their respective events, and the men's DMR team featuring Drew Taylor, Jon Sadanaga, Alex Whatley, and Danny Jagoe also finished second.

    Sadanaga competed on both Ithaca College's distance medley relay team as well as the 4 x 400 meter relay team. The meet marked just the second ever indoor collegiate competition for the second-year student.

    "Getting back on the indoor track certainly took some getting used to," said Sadanaga. "There is a lot of things you have to consider in terms of the runners around you."

    Sadanaga said that even though he did not race against Cornell's A-Team, it was exciting to compete against talent from the Division I level. "We showed up and we knew we could compete," said Sadanaga.

    "I think we have a really deep, young, and competitive team," said Sadanaga. "It's very early in the season, but I think the Cornell meet gives us a good gauge of where we are at."
